Well, I set this thing up so I would have something to feed into Ravelry so I suppose I’d better begin.
If you’re coming here from LiveJournal (or reading this here, since it’s crossposted) I should probably note that I’m widening my “oeconomist” remit to include crafts in general, so in addition to the cooking and personal finance stuff and household management, you’ll also see me talking about knitting and sewing and perhaps some history geeking about random domestic crafts.
But for now, it’s all about the knitting. That’s because I’m procrastinating about my move.
WIPs
* Crocheted afghan in monochrome. Round and round and round and round and round. Almost finished and I’d really like to get it done so I can pack it and ship it overseas on Wednesday. Rather dependent on cool weather, though, since if it gets above 20-something it’s too hot to work on it.
* Yoda jumper for my sister’s sprog. A stash-buster. 12 ply off-white, kimono-style wrapper for a baby.
* Coronet wrist warmers, to match the hat I made. I’m not quite sure what all the fuss is with these wrist warmers and fingerless mitts that I keep seeing around the place, but to be honest I just want to practice the cable-without-a-cable-needle technique, provisional cast-on, and kitchener stitch, while using up the tail end of the ball. If I never wear them I won’t really mind.
* Purple waterfall lace scarf. I cast this on as a basic/introductory lace project and now I’m kind of bored stupid. I do like it well enough to want to wear it, but I’m just a bit sick of the knitting of it. Probably needs a couple of long stretches of sitting round chatting to people and not thinking about it too hard, and it’ll fly past. It’s a 6 stitch, 6 row repeat that looks a bit like cables on the right side and ribby on the wrong side.
So those are what I actually have cast on to the needles right now.
Stash thoughts
I’ve diminished my stash enormously by giving a boxful to Splodgenoodles and putting a boxful (bright 8 ply wool for future, as yet unknown, afghans) in storage. Most of my stash is plain wool from eBay granny stashes, and all I’ve kept are a few favourite bits and pieces. So, things I am thinking of knitting from that pile.
* 10 x 25g of ecru 5ply superwash wool could either become 2 pairs of socks (because hey, washable) or a scarf. I’m considering a reprise of my “masculine” scarf but in a smaller gauge and with a couple of sporty black stripes at the ends. Is black/ecru a good colour combo?
* 10 x 50g black machine washable wool will, I think, become a sleeveless vest, though I know that won’t use it all. I’m thinking of using a pattern from The Knitter’s Handy Book of Sweater Patterns for the basic shape of it, but doing cables/ribs for a good 8″ along the bottom, so that it’s kind of fitted. What is it with me and cables and black? I mustn’t want people to see the stitches, or something.
* 12 ply wool in black, grey, and off-white (same stuff as the yoda baby jacket’s made out of), I’m thinking of trying that technique that Megan showed me with the slipped stitches that look like fair-isle. It all hinges on me finding the photocopied pages she gave me; I’m hoping they’ll emerge in the process of my packing.
* Lovely soft 8 ply wool in pale grey, I’m thinking of knitting Elbac from Knitty but widening it by an additional pattern repeat, and making a hat to match.
Tomorrow I’m going to pack the suitcase that is holding most of my clothes for the relocation, and depending on how much space there is around the edges I may pack some of this stash in there. Otherwise it’ll be going to San Francisco on a slow boat and we’ll be reunited in a couple of months.
